We’d like to thank you for your support the sixth running of this fabulous village event with its breathtaking scenery. The race is mainly off road and uses tracks and paths not normally open to the public. There are delightful woodland paths to be enjoyed and the later stages of the run meanders through the village and goes through the beautiful 11th century village churchyard. There are several playful hills en route including Lilleshall Hill itself which affords fabulous views to the nearby Abbey ruins and across to the Welsh mountains.
Despite the grey sky, the day was one for one for all the family to enjoy, with the fun run starting at 10.45 am, followed by the 10k at 11.30am. A lively warm up took place prior to the fun run and food and drinks were available throughout the morning. The cricket club bar was open for those who develop a serious thirst! The course is well marshalled and sells itself as extremely friendly – check out reports on Runners’ World!
Unfortunately, we had a problem at one section of the course. At about the 7k point, a combination of factors led to about thirty runners going the wrong way and running anywhere up to 700m further than they should have done. Obviously we are incredibly sorry about this and the disappointment it caused for those affected. Unfortunately it is not possible for us to work out how much each of these runners over-ran or how much time they lost in the process. So we have decided that the race results for the day will stand with positions and times as they were taken on the day. Because of this it unfortunately not possible to find a fair way of awarding all of the category prizes for the Monumental this year.
Of the thirty runners who went out of their way and had to double back, eight were series entrants and we have decided to adjust the points awarded for these runners accordingly. In order to be as fair as possible, we have reached the decision that, anyone affected (runners finishing between third and thirtieth) will be awarded identical series points, and within that group, those in the same category will be awarded identical category points. We hope everyone will agree that this will not unfairly affect anyone’s chances in the series.
Prizes are awarded for the first three men and women and category prizes in the 10k race. There is also a commemorative hand-towel for all 10K entrants. Goody bags will be available to everyone who takes part in the fun run and shields are awarded to the first girl and boy from each school year group.
With your help in attending this race, we are delighted to report that over £7000 has been raised in the last 6 years to support sporting activities within the local community for young people. Last year we were raising money to help provide an outdoor climbing wall for the village school and community to enjoy. This year, we’ll be raising money to improve facilities at the village Cricket Club and Community Centre.
There’s never been a better reason to take part in the Lilleshall Monumental race!
