Shugborough Relays
Stafford Harriers organised one of the highlights of the year recently at the Shugborough Estates when the magnificent turnout of over 1200 runners turned out to race the Shugborough Relays.
Newport and District Running Club put out a tremendous 19 teams of four to race the two miles round the beautiful grounds of the estate which is a credit to the team spirit within the club as it was probably the biggest turnout of any club on the night.
The team of Noel Hogan, Maurice Reid, Tom O’Boyle and John Taylor had a combined time of 47m 33s to win their group and other teams also did well including the new members to the club who had only been running for a few weeks, but gave their all and were cheered on by other club members.
Special mention must go to all the junior runners, who put everything into the event and the future of the club looks in good hands if they continue to progress.
Exceptional performances were produced by Tom O’Boyle who recorded 11m 17s for his two mile leg and Abbi Guy for the Newport’s Rising Stars Junior Team who flew round in an amazing 12m 35s, a tremendous achievement for someone of her age.
The big winner though was the sport of running, to see 1200+ runners of all ages and abilities enjoying a festival and competition such as this was uplifting to say the least.
